Regarding the Smoke

Last Thursday, the board sat down with representatives from the club, and we were given a strong warning from MLS about recent behavior in our sections.

The smoke bomb situation has gotten out of control, and we need to stop it cold.

At the last home game, we had two bombs set off in our section, and people who were totally uninvolved got blamed for it.  In addition, somebody wearing a TR scarf walked into the middle of the City Beats post-game party and lit off a bomb.  That’s completely unacceptable.  It’s one thing to do it on River Avenue after a match (which is between you and the NYPD), it's totally another to intrude on somebody else’s celebration.  Similarly, at the Cosmos game we saw many people throwing smoke bombs and trash onto the pitch. That's never okay.

Now, we have many legitimate concerns about Securitas overreacting. There are many things we think we should be able to bring into the supporters section. But smoke bombs aren't part of that discussion.  They aren't allowed in any MLS stadium, and that's not going to change.

We are working very hard with the club and with Yankee Stadium to expand the unreasonable restrictions initially put upon us, and we’re already starting to get some traction.  Incidents like these make that job exponentially harder.  We will continue to push for more freedoms, but we all need to show that we’re not the irresponsible hooligans they so obviously feared we would be.

There's a lot that we are trying to achieve in Yankee Stadium. We want flagpoles in our section.  We megaphones for our capos.  We want to set off smoke under controlled conditions, the way they do at stadiums around the league.  We know many of you share those goals, and we're asking you to help us get there.  We must stop bringing the smoke bombs into Yankee Stadium.  Make sure that no Third Rail member brings them in or lights one off. If you see someone from outside our group throwing one, you always have the option of telling Security or using the anonymous Yankee Stadium text hotline: (917) 746-0088.

This goes for road matches and Cup games as well – any events featuring NYCFC. MLS is watching what we do, and we have to obey the rules at other stadiums the way we do at home.  We are told that they are reviewing incidents from the recent Cup match at Hofstra.

Now, it's very possible that we're not responsible for these events. Not everyone at Hofstra was a member. But the Third Rail will be blamed for anything that happens in our section, and we need to discourage members and non-members alike from doing anything that will reflect badly on us.

It doesn't just hurt the group; there may also be individual sanctions against those involved, up to and including a permanent ban from all MLS stadiums and events (which means you'll get arrested for trespassing if you even try to attend a game).  Please don't make it come to that.

The bottom line is really simple - smoke bombs will mean sanctions from the league, more scrutiny from Securitas, and less freedom at Yankee Stadium. Losing the bombs means getting more of the other things we want, and more fun for everyone.  Every single incident, home or away, will count against us and make it harder to improve the atmosphere at Yankee Stadium.

We’ve already made our sections a fantastic place to watch a game.  We can continue to make it even better.  Please help us do so.

The other good news is that we want to make these sit downs with the club a more regular event, so we can carry your concerns and feedback to them.  We will be soliciting your questions as soon as there's a date for the next one. And with your help, the next time we sit down with the club, it won't be about hearing complaints from the league but instead about getting more of what we all want.

Mix Scores for the US in Their Win Over Germany

The USMNT came from a goal down to beat World Champions, Germany, on their home soil - and it was our very own Mix Diskerud who started the comeback with a fine equalizer.

Check it out.

Montreal at Home

If you didn't hear --- we actually won last week!!!!!!

Here's hoping to make it two in a row as we face Canadian opposition, Montreal.

The Third Rail will be at our usual spots - the Dugout and Billy's and look forward to pre-gaming with you there.

Game kicks off at 7pm on Saturday the 13th of June.

See you at the game!

Opinion Piece: City Beats Needs Some Changes

By Third Rail Member Eric Barber

This is an opinion piece from a member and not all members of the Third Rail might agree with the following opinions.

The NYCFC website says that the band they have hired, City Beats, is there to help “enhance the fan’s match-day experience.” In more ways than one they are doing the opposite. Along with the other great supporters sections, we the Third Rail sing and chant throughout the game in the general admission bleacher sections 235-238. These sections are the home of the most passionate NYCFC fans, but in my mind we are being overshadowed.

When we cheer in the bleachers, we are singing as loud as we can and we even have a couple of drums, but the sound of the loud marching band instruments is something that we can not compete with. The acoustics of Yankee Stadium are already not great (that’s another story), and adding to the noise is horns and double the amount of drums we have in our sections that the club has designated to us.

Friends have told me that when they watch the games on TV, they can’t hear any chanting or fans. The only thing they hear is a marching band. That’s just TV. Members of our group who happen to sit in other sections of the stadium have said that City Beats makes a lot of noise and they can’t hear us.

We are the Third Rail. We are there to power our team on throughout every game. Not only do we want to let the opposing fans know that we have a presence, but we want to motivate our own players. This is not possible, however, with our noise being drowned out. Now I’m not saying that I dislike City Beats. They play some great songs, and they bring an upbeat musical presence. But the club’s front office has to make some changes for the band to work out and to make the supporters truly happy.

First, they should not be playing throughout the game. Soccer, unlike most other sports here in America, plays continuously for 45 minutes 2 separate times. At baseball or football or even basketball games, there are timeouts and inning and quarter breaks. City Beats would be great in situations like that, but soccer is not a sport that works like that. They are a good musical group for halftime and before and after the games, but when the players are on the pitch, that is not the time.

Second, City Beats does a lot of work before and after the game right outside the stadium. That works very well. People of all different ages think its cool to see them outside. That is something that maybe they can pre record and show on the jumbotron.

Third, in our supporter’s section we have some very talented drummers. There is even a group that plays cool music called the Templados. Possibly there could be collaboration between City Beats and the Templados. It would be great interaction between the club and its supporters. Possibly we could lead a chant for the whole stadium. We could work with the club on getting a leader or just straight up Templados drummers on the big screen and have the stadium do one of our signature chants. It could be almost like a Fireman Ed thing that the Jets had for awhile.

Look, I’m not trying to say that the club should disband City Beats. Just the concept needs improvement. They drown out most of our sound, they distract the TV viewer, and most importantly it is unpleasant for most people around the stadium. They are good in little doses, but that is it. Right now there is some disconnect between the club and the supporters on a number of different issues. The City Beats issue is one that is easily fixable. The mindset that I have is not set in stone. The ideas for improvement can change, but one things for sure, as long as the Third Rail is in the bleachers, doesn’t matter if there is City Beats or Not, win or lose we will always follow NYCFC.

NYCFC v Houston Dynamo

To say that the team has not played well of late is an understatement, but we, as supporters of NYCFC, will be there all the way -- win, lose or draw!

This Saturday at 7pm EDT, New York City FC take on Houston at Yankee Stadium in search of that elusive three points.

The Third Rail will be meeting up from 4pm onwards at Billy's and the Dugout behind Yankee Stadium.

Come join us for what will definitely be a lot of fun - and you never know...we might even get a win!

Who Will Be The Next Designated Player?

Another game, another loss.  For the 10th time in a row, our boys in blue failed to earn 3 points, and for the 5th time this season, have failed to score a single goal (out of 12 total games).  Even with the star power of David Villa and Mix Diskerud (and eventually Frank Lampard), NYCFC has failed thus far, finding themselves at the bottom of the league table.  This is to be expected though.  This is an expansion team we are talking about.  However, it’s still early in the season, and there’s plenty of time to crawl back into a playoff spot.  With that said, NYCFC needs more talent on the field.  There are glaring weaknesses on all sides of the field, from defending to maintaining possession, and executing in front of the net.

Not picking up a 3rd designated player doesn’t really make sense.  The team has yet to completely gel together, and no one has solidified their spot or role with the team, with the exception of Josh Saunders.

Here are a few possible options for a 3rd DP this summer:

I left off a few names like Drogba and Pirlo because of their age.  Recent transfer rumours suggest otherwise, but players at their age cannot fit into Jason Kreis’  “100 year” plan.

Only one thing is certain, NYCFC can only get better from here.  This summer should prove to be exciting with the anticipation of our first Hudson Derby home match and the arrival of Lampard.  Maybe in the coming weeks NYCFC can bring in some new talent and surprise us all, on and off the pitch.

Long live NYCFC.  Long live the Third Rail.
